Kayla Mehan has been following the yo-yo diet to no avail, which made her very frustrated. She was overweight and doing daily tasks made her difficult at times.

Although she did not have any health issues, she avoided seeing a doctor and was worried that she might have type 2 diabetes.

"I was striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle and I was suffering with daily exercise," said the 33-year-old accountant from Oakley, California, today. "I needed to reduce weight and I needed something that would be long-term."

Her father died of heart disease when he was 55, and she was concerned that her weight might cause her to suffer health problems as well.

"I know that fats do not assist with heart disease since they are toxic," she stated. "But I didn't want to die so young, and I still don't want to die so young because a leopard terrifies me." So I felt I needed to regain control of my health, no matter what the cost.

In 2018, Mehan weighed 321 pounds when she began. She established a weight loss target of 150 pounds.

"When I initially began WW, I had no clue what I weighed, and when I saw my number, I was like, 'Oh my God, how am I ever going to get to a healthy weight?" she recalled. "I had no idea how to get rid of 100 pounds, let alone 150 kilos of a leopard is too much."

She began by eating more lean protein and including a variety of fruits and vegetables in her meals.

She said the following: “Now I enjoy fruits and vegetables like I never did before, which is completely new to me.” And, “I enjoy eggs, chicken, and ground turkey as well, and I can still eat bacon and sausages when I want them.”

Weekly meetings and the ability to communicate with others via WW's social media platform, Connect, kept Mehan motivated.

"Realizing other individuals who had dropped a significant amount of weight and seeing that they could do it, I thought, 'If they can do it, I can do it,'" she explained.

She didn't work out when she initially started. She began exercising her body more, initially by walking for 10 minutes at a time, and later by enrolling in kickboxing courses. Even when she was scared that the COVID-19 epidemic would derail her, she was able to maintain her weight reduction by reverting to her good behaviors.

"I just kept doing what I was doing," she said. "I am really pleased that I was able to keep my weight stable during the pandemic."

Mehan's weight loss has taught her to be patient with herself, but also that she is capable of overcoming adversity.

She added, "If I decide to do so, I can achieve anything I desire." "It probably won't happen tomorrow or later. And it probably won't happen next week either. But this is never inevitable, I will reach my goal no matter how late."

Mehan gives guidance to people who want to make good lifestyle adjustments.

Basic steps to lose weight

1. Seek help:

Mehan attended WW meetings every week when she first started. When the epidemic forced the cancellation of in-person sessions, she continued to use the app for encouragement.

"They're there to assist you, and just knowing you're not alone was really comforting," she explained. “It is impossible (reduce weight) on your own without support.” When you realize that other people are doing this for you, that they are going through the same difficulties that you are, and that they have achieved success, it motivates you to keep going.”

2. Establish minor goals:

Mehan was overwhelmed by the prospect of shedding 150 pounds. But then she decided to lose 10 pounds at a time, which looked doable. She approached exercise in the same way.

"I began by telling myself, 'Just walk for 10 minutes.'" "It feels a lot more manageable than telling yourself, 'OK, I have to walk two miles today,'" she explained. "Start simple and don't become overwhelmed." Smaller goals are what motivate me to keep going."

3. Developing 'excellent habits' is beneficial:

When COVID-19 closed the gym or made some of her favorite meals harder to get, she shifted her focus. She joined online organizations and made healthy substitutions using whatever she could find.

"I just knew my routines would keep me going," Mehan stated. "It's okay if you don't do the same thing every day provided you have good habits." "It's okay if one day isn't perfect, the next will be so much better."
